  1. 2008? You’re frakkin’ kidding me!

    March 25, 2007 :: 9:20 pm

    We have to wait until 2008 for new episodes of The Best Show On Television?? A nine-month (or more!) hiatus?? What the frak?!

    The season finale of Battlestar Galactica, which aired tonight, was very revealing. I won’t post any spoilers for those of you who may not have seen it yet. But I will say that my theory about Kara proved out to some degree, and my secondary theory about the music also proved out. (Excuse me while I flagrantly congratulate myself on being a master of what was certainly obvious to everyone else.)

    Just for fun, here’s a little comparison: Apollo and Starbuck, with their toaster buddies, through the ages. Nice winter coats, fellas!

  2. the truth about childbirth

    October 8, 2006 :: 6:50 pm

    Childbirth has been so romanticized. I guess because if people really knew the truth…

    Narrator to 1950s husband and wife: “Congratulations! You’re expecting! Don’t worry, your doctor will tell you everything you need to know. Hi, Doctor!”

    Doctor: “You’ll fart, pee, puke, and poop in front of ten complete strangers who’ll be staring intently at your vagina, which, by the way, has an 80 percent chance of tearing!”

    Wife worriedly turns to husband: “You do it.”

  3. i guess now we’ll NEVER meet the furlings

    I’m actually surprised that Stargate lasted as long as it did. I thought that it was kind of running out of steam by season 7, and had definitely lost its way by season 8. The 200th episode, which aired last Friday, however, was absolutely fantastic. So many inside jokes, so much poking fun at themselves.

    SG-1 Ends Run; Atlantis Back

    SCI FI Channel confirmed that it will not renew its record-breaking original series Stargate SG-1 for another season, but will pick up its spinoff series Stargate Atlantis for a fourth year. SG-1 aired its 200th episode on Aug. 18, and the SF series is the longest-running SF show on American television.

    SCI FI issued the following statement on Aug. 21: “SCI FI Channel is proud to be the network that brought Stargate SG-1 to its record-breaking 10th season. Ten seasons and 215 episodes is an astounding, Guinness World Record-setting accomplishment. Stargate is a worldwide phenomenon. Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, SCI FI believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel. SCI FI is honored to have been part of the Stargate legacy for five years, and we look forward to continuing to explore the Stargate universe with our partners at MGM through a new season of Stargate Atlantis.”

    Stargate SG-1, developed for television by executive producers Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, is based on the 1994 feature film Stargate. SG-1, which originally starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge, began on Showtime, then moved to SCI FI after five seasons. The current cast includes Tapping, Shanks and Judge and newcomers Ben Browder, Claudia Black and Beau Bridges. It airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  4. quite in-de-fat-i-gable

    July 29, 2006 :: 10:27 pm

    Yes, I know I spelled the title wrong. It’s phoenetic. Go with me here.

    Prepare for hilarity to ensue when Captain Kirk and his Knights of the Round Table sing about that silly place known as Camelot!

  5. the weekend

    June 26, 2006 :: 8:57 pm

    Saturday I ran about 3 miles at the lake. I’m never quite sure how far I’m going because the mileage markers leave something to be desired. So I just run it by time, which isn’t of course as accurate. But then again, accuracy is not really my goal. It was very humid Saturday morning so I heated up really fast and had a tough time cooling down, and I had to walk some. Tonight I ran a very easy 3 miles (or so — we lost track and I think we probably went a few extra laps) at the gym. Man, I tell you, air conditioning makes all the difference.

    Saturday night we went to Yvonne’s birthday party at her house. She and Nate cooked dinner (grilled stuff and salads — she makes a mean peanut noodle salad) and made the most massive vat of sangria I’ve ever seen in my life. Seriously, there was probably 10 gallons of the stuff in a huge octagonal glass jar that sat on ice in their sink. It was Yvonne’s Magical Mystery Sangria. It sneaks up on you! I even ate sangria-soaked watermelon. It wasn’t bad! Walker was freaked out at the sight of me again, but I bribed him with a milk-bone and then we were best friends. I think he must have had a bad experience with a tall or curly-haired woman in his former life as a street puppy.

    Mom and Dad were in town Saturday night but left early Sunday morning, so we didn’t get to see much of them this time. We’re going to Lubbock in August to see Bob graduate and we might go to Houston for a couple of days afterwards just to spend some time with them. This is (knock on wood) their last summer in Houston.

    I feel really bloated and piggy lately. My eating habits have gotten shitty again. Let me rephrase that to take proper personal responsibility: I’ve been shoving lots of bad-for-me food into my cakehole, and I need to do something about it. All this running isn’t going to do me a bit of good if I don’t trim down so I’m not lugging around 30 extra pounds on the marathon.

    Yesterday I went through my desks and threw away a bunch of stuff that I didn’t need anymore. I’m trying to change my packrat tendencies (“but I might need that some day!”) and I tossed out/recycled stuff that I hadn’t used in a few years. I am having severe minimalistic urges lately that directly conflict with my need to save stuff. I’m not sure where this is going to take me.

    Last night was the season premiere of the Venture Brothers (season two). I was dreading that it wouldn’t hold up to the quality of the first season, but it’s looking good so far. Holy shit, it’s Dean Fucking Venture!

  6. cars!

    June 11, 2006 :: 3:22 pm

    I’m kind of embarrassed by my last post. It makes me seem like a whiny baby. I thought about deleting it, but a larger part of me doesn’t really want to, because that wouldn’t be true to myself. I WAS feeling sad and lonely that night, and I don’t want to edit my personal history to make me sound better — to myself or others. I am who I am. I know y’all love me even if I am moody sometimes.

    On Friday I did go running over the lunch hour, as planned. I really liked getting it out of the way in the middle of the day and freeing up my evening, but my energy level did not seem quite as good as it usually is in the late afternoons. Also I wasn’t sure how the timing would work out — getting to the gym, running, showering, and getting back to the office within an hour (it didn’t quite work). I ran 3 miles, although I’d only planned to do 1.5. My legs were really burning and I thought I’d have to stop, but I pushed myself hard to 2.5 miles and by then the pain disappeared, so I went for all 3.

    I think I’ll try it a couple more times and see how my energy is, and if I can streamline the timing somewhat.

    After work I went to Gloria’s with Yvonne, Nate, Jim, Brittney, Chelsea, and also Bill from our office. There was much laughter, sangria, and margaritas all around. I decided to come home afterwards rather than see if anyone wanted to hang out, because I was a little tired from my lunchtime run and the alcohol.

    Saturday was a day of errands — the bank, the shoe store (where I located a pair of black slide sandals nearly identical to my ancient pair whose sole has cracked in half — but they’re MENS shoes, strangely enough; see photo at right but imagine them in black), and the grocery. Central Market sends me these great coupons, usually for things like free meat or $10 off groceries with $40 purchase. So I ended up with a free 1.25 pound sirloin steak (dinner tonight!) and some free blueberries and ice cream. I did not get any exercise in Saturday, but I was intending it to be a day off, so I don’t feel that bad about it.

    Tonight we are going biking around White Rock Lake. Nate and Yvonne plan to join us as well. It’s pretty damn hot out right now (97 degrees) so hopefully it will have cooled off a little in a couple of hours when we meet them. This morning I baked some blueberry lemon corn muffins and this afternoon I baked some buns that are supposed to be similar to the ones served at Schlotzsky’s restaurants. We’ll see about that. Now I’m cooking a mini-meatloaf that I can slice for a sandwich tomorrow.

    We saw “Cars” this morning. It was fantastic! I wasn’t sure how they were going to make an entire feature film about automobiles, but they have that fucking Pixar magic working in their favor. I wonder if Steve Jobs’ reality distortion field is reaching that far?? One of my favorite parts by far is the end credits. Definitely stay all the way through! I won’t spoil it for you by telling you why; all I will say is Monster Trucks Inc.

    “Cars” reminds me a little of one of my all-time favorite “old-style” cartoons — the one about the son of a taxicab who wants to be a racecar.

  7. Jim and Pam

    May 15, 2006 :: 10:47 pm

    I am in love with “The Office.”

    I know it’s silly to be so taken in by a TV show. But there is just something about the characters, the brilliant writing, and the fantastic acting on the American version of “The Office” that has me completely hooked.

    The season finale last week was amazing, one of the best episodes of this or any other TV show I have seen. I’ve watched it in its entirety three times, and have watched the last three scenes about a dozen times! I know it’s silly, and probably really girly and overly romantic, but the Jim/Pam unrequited love thing — and his last-ditch declaration of his love for her in the parking lot — had me practically in tears. I don’t want to wait until fall to find out what happens next!!

  8. permagir

    March 6, 2006 :: 12:15 pm

    this is the latest in bob’s growing collection of skin art!!

    “but i neeeeeeed tacos! i need them or i will explode! that happens to me sometimes…”
    “i miss you, cupcake”
    “i wanna watch the scary monkey show!”
    “chicken!! i’m gonna eat you.”
    “me and the squirrel are friends.”
    “why is his head so BIG? why IS his head so big? WHY is his head so big?”
    “hi, floor! make me a sammitch!”
    “to make room for the tuna!”
    “i’m floatin!”
    “say moosey fate! say moosey fate!”

    and, not gir, but definitely one of my favorites:
    “invader’s blood runs through my veins like giant radioactive rubber pants! the pants command me! do not ignore my veins!”

  10. family guy "take on me"

    August 25, 2005 :: 2:42 pm

    this had me laughing until i cried last night. i saw this episode of “family guy” when it aired on tv a few weeks back, and i discovered that someone had made a flash version of it. the a-ha video for “take on me” is one of the greatest videos ever made, in my humble opinion, and this is just a fabulous rendition of it.

  11. daytime television rots my brain

    June 22, 2005 :: 9:02 pm

    i don’t get sick very often, but when i do, i REALLY get sick. i’ve had some sort of snarky respiratory plague since last friday, when i was still technically on vacation. i was supposed to have gone back to work on monday but didn’t go in until today, and only a half day at that. i’ve been spending the past five days whining about my sore throat, drinking lots of fluids like a good little sick person, sucking on cough drops, not sleeping (whatever -itis i have also comes with a free bonus symptom: insomnia!), and watching lots of tv.

    i can always get my richard dean anderson fix during the day on my season 7 stargate DVD set… or by simply turning on TNT and watching reruns of macgyver! ahh, the days of the mullet. rick rick rick, what were you thinking?

    somebody’s put together a very meticulous list of all the “macgyverisms” from the show — the times that he did stuff like use chewing gum and a paper clip to make a bomb. for instance, in the pilot episode, macgyver:

    Disarmed missle with a paperclip
    Matches & rope got rifle to shoot itself
    Smashed pistol barrel to use as rocket thruster
    Kicked grate to test for hidden laser
    Lit cigarette with hidden laser
    Smoked cigarette to find hidden laser
    Used binocular eyepiece to catch laser beam
    Aimed laser beam at source to “kill” it
    Knotted fire hose to build up water pressure
    Used said hose to lift steel beam
    Tested heat on door with a stick (it caught fire)
    Milk Chocolate candy stops sulphuric acid leak
    Used shirt to filter gases
    Sodium metal & cold capsule explosive
    Flipped lights in morse code

  12. meet joe

    April 20, 2005 :: 8:17 pm

    meet joe. joe flanigan plays major john sheppard on stargate atlantis, one of the best shows on television. i really like his character, in part because he’s very “jack o’neill” in his self-deprecating humor. plus, he can raise one eyebrow and that’s always cool.

    i’m really glad that atlantis is turning out well. i was worried that they were going to cancel sg-1, and atlantis would be its replacement, but it looks like there is a 9th season of sg-1 starting in june. however, the teasers worry me: “meet the new team.” i don’t want a new team! i like jack, sam, daniel, and teal’c! i never even warmed up to jonas during those 2 seasons he replaced daniel. anyway, i did a little research and it seems like they’re bringing in a new head of the sgc, and jack is going to head up homeworld security for the u.s. government… or something like that. which sucks, because i really love his character and will hate to see him playing a lesser role. he already has been this past season (and general hammond is almost completely phased out).

    god, my geekiness is totally showing with this post. oh well, most of you know this about me already.
