SciFi Channel Original Movies

I swear, if the SciFi channel would spend half their "original movies" budget on making more quality shows like the new "Battlestar Galactica" series, or even syndicating older quality sci-fi shows, the world would be a better place.

I have to hand it to them, the names that they come up with are hilarious. But seriously, how many movies do we need like...

Flu Bird Horror!
Monster Ark!
Anonymous Rex!
Kaw!
Supergator!

and, my all time favorite:

Mansquito!

With my freeze ray, I could stop the world

If you have not yet experienced the epic greatness that is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, I cannot recommend it highly enough!! Neil Patrick Harris cracks me up. The songs are great. The characters are great. (Bad Horse... Moist... Captain Hammer, Corporate Tool... )

The thing I really like about the charater of Dr. Horrible is that he's not really horrible. He's actually a pretty normal guy, sweet and well meaning, and just a little bit lost in this big horrible world. He feels useless and unnoticed, and tries to rectify that by acting as both villlain and anti-villain at the same time. He's a very complex character, struggling and sad... sorta like all of us, in a way.

I laughed. I cried. I really actually sang along!

There's only three episodes, and they're something like 15 minutes each. Apparently, there is going to be at least one more episode made! Yay!

Good News, Everyone!

1820 to 1887: Golden Age Of Muttonchops.
1973: Computers will double in speed between now and the year 3000.
evening of 31st December 1999: Nibbler orders a pizza to be delivered to Applied Cryogenics, using the pseudonym I. C. Weiner.
2012: War of 2012. Conan O'Brien loses his freakishly long legs.
2063: Humanity starts dropping ice cubes into the ocean to counteract global warming
2200: Pine trees become extinct
2620: To end that stupid joke once and for all, Uranus is renamed... to "Urectum".

It's the Futurama timeline! Constructed by nerdy people with too much time on their hands (love you, nerds!)

Speaking of time-sucking nerdy pursuits, this guy made his own custom Lego set! Completely freaking awesome.

Aaaah! Real Monsters!

I miss Aaaah! Real Monsters! It was a funny, clever, and well-written TV show about young monsters in monster-training school. Krumm (at left) had the scary power of Body Odor, and held his eyeballs in his hands, which came in real handy when needing to peek under something or around a corner. Oblina (at left) scared people by pulling her internal organs out through her mouth. And my favorite, Ickis (center), LOOMED. He could grow to several times his own size, but had a hard time looming on command. People often mistook him for a bunny rabbit, which embarrassed him and made it even harder to loom.

Space Maxi-Mountain!

I just saw the most BIZARRE advertisement on television. An animated maxi-pad with wheels zoomed up, down, around and sideways on a ROLLER COASTER TRACK.

I have no idea what the point of it was, as I was too busy contemplating a Feminine Hygiene Thrill Ride to pay attention to the assuredly convincing argument being made by the voiceover.

Perhaps the point was "Your Period: Like The Judge Roy Scream, Only Bloodier!"

Miso, miso

I have to do this, it's been running through my head for days now (this mixed with First Born Unicorn and Crumbelievable!)

Remember the time we had that soup?

Soup, soup
Oh tasty soup, soup
Oh spicy carrot and coriander
Chilli chowder
Crouton, crouton: crunchy friends in a liquid broth
I am gazpacho, oh!
I am a summer soup, mmmm.
Miso, miso
Fighting in the dojo
Miso, miso
Oriental prince in the land of soup!

My Hovercraft is Full of Eels

MY HOVERCRAFT IS FULL OF EELS! And my nipples are exploding with delight!
Haven't thought about that in YEARS! Ahh, the good old days when I could watch Monty Python's Flying Circus and The Young Ones late at night on PBS...

2008? You're frakkin' kidding me!

We have to wait until 2008 for new episodes of The Best Show On Television?? A nine-month (or more!) hiatus?? What the frak?!

The season finale of Battlestar Galactica, which aired tonight, was very revealing. I won't post any spoilers for those of you who may not have seen it yet. But I will say that my theory about Kara proved out to some degree, and my secondary theory about the music also proved out. (Excuse me while I flagrantly congratulate myself on being a master of what was certainly obvious to everyone else.)

Just for fun, here's a little comparison: Apollo and Starbuck, with their toaster buddies, through the ages. Nice winter coats, fellas!

the truth about childbirth

Childbirth has been so romanticized. I guess because if people really knew the truth...

Narrator to 1950s husband and wife: "Congratulations! You're expecting! Don't worry, your doctor will tell you everything you need to know. Hi, Doctor!"

Doctor: "You'll fart, pee, puke, and poop in front of ten complete strangers who'll be staring intently at your vagina, which, by the way, has an 80 percent chance of tearing!"

Wife worriedly turns to husband: "You do it."

i guess now we'll NEVER meet the furlings

I'm actually surprised that Stargate lasted as long as it did. I thought that it was kind of running out of steam by season 7, and had definitely lost its way by season 8. The 200th episode, which aired last Friday, however, was absolutely fantastic. So many inside jokes, so much poking fun at themselves.

SG-1 Ends Run; Atlantis Back

SCI FI Channel confirmed that it will not renew its record-breaking original series Stargate SG-1 for another season, but will pick up its spinoff series Stargate Atlantis for a fourth year. SG-1 aired its 200th episode on Aug. 18, and the SF series is the longest-running SF show on American television.

SCI FI issued the following statement on Aug. 21: "SCI FI Channel is proud to be the network that brought Stargate SG-1 to its record-breaking 10th season. Ten seasons and 215 episodes is an astounding, Guinness World Record-setting accomplishment. Stargate is a worldwide phenomenon. Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, SCI FI believes that the time is right to make this season their last on the channel. SCI FI is honored to have been part of the Stargate legacy for five years, and we look forward to continuing to explore the Stargate universe with our partners at MGM through a new season of Stargate Atlantis."

Stargate SG-1, developed for television by executive producers Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner, is based on the 1994 feature film Stargate. SG-1, which originally starred Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping and Christopher Judge, began on Showtime, then moved to SCI FI after five seasons. The current cast includes Tapping, Shanks and Judge and newcomers Ben Browder, Claudia Black and Beau Bridges. It airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

cars!

I'm kind of embarrassed by my last post. It makes me seem like a whiny baby. I thought about deleting it, but a larger part of me doesn't really want to, because that wouldn't be true to myself. I WAS feeling sad and lonely that night, and I don't want to edit my personal history to make me sound better -- to myself or others. I am who I am. I know y'all love me even if I am moody sometimes.

On Friday I did go running over the lunch hour, as planned. I really liked getting it out of the way in the middle of the day and freeing up my evening, but my energy level did not seem quite as good as it usually is in the late afternoons. Also I wasn't sure how the timing would work out -- getting to the gym, running, showering, and getting back to the office within an hour (it didn't quite work). I ran 3 miles, although I'd only planned to do 1.5. My legs were really burning and I thought I'd have to stop, but I pushed myself hard to 2.5 miles and by then the pain disappeared, so I went for all 3.

I think I'll try it a couple more times and see how my energy is, and if I can streamline the timing somewhat.

After work I went to Gloria's with Yvonne, Nate, Jim, Brittney, Chelsea, and also Bill from our office. There was much laughter, sangria, and margaritas all around. I decided to come home afterwards rather than see if anyone wanted to hang out, because I was a little tired from my lunchtime run and the alcohol.

Saturday was a day of errands -- the bank, the shoe store (where I located a pair of black slide sandals nearly identical to my ancient pair whose sole has cracked in half -- but they're MENS shoes, strangely enough; see photo at right but imagine them in black), and the grocery. Central Market sends me these great coupons, usually for things like free meat or $10 off groceries with $40 purchase. So I ended up with a free 1.25 pound sirloin steak (dinner tonight!) and some free blueberries and ice cream. I did not get any exercise in Saturday, but I was intending it to be a day off, so I don't feel that bad about it.

Tonight we are going biking around White Rock Lake. Nate and Yvonne plan to join us as well. It's pretty damn hot out right now (97 degrees) so hopefully it will have cooled off a little in a couple of hours when we meet them. This morning I baked some blueberry lemon corn muffins and this afternoon I baked some buns that are supposed to be similar to the ones served at Schlotzsky's restaurants. We'll see about that. Now I'm cooking a mini-meatloaf that I can slice for a sandwich tomorrow.

We saw "Cars" this morning. It was fantastic! I wasn't sure how they were going to make an entire feature film about automobiles, but they have that fucking Pixar magic working in their favor. I wonder if Steve Jobs' reality distortion field is reaching that far?? One of my favorite parts by far is the end credits. Definitely stay all the way through! I won't spoil it for you by telling you why; all I will say is Monster Trucks Inc.

"Cars" reminds me a little of one of my all-time favorite "old-style" cartoons -- the one about the son of a taxicab who wants to be a racecar.

Jim and Pam

I am in love with "The Office."

I know it's silly to be so taken in by a TV show. But there is just something about the characters, the brilliant writing, and the fantastic acting on the American version of "The Office" that has me completely hooked.

The season finale last week was amazing, one of the best episodes of this or any other TV show I have seen. I've watched it in its entirety three times, and have watched the last three scenes about a dozen times! I know it's silly, and probably really girly and overly romantic, but the Jim/Pam unrequited love thing -- and his last-ditch declaration of his love for her in the parking lot -- had me practically in tears. I don't want to wait until fall to find out what happens next!!
